Foyles can easily lay claim to the title of London’s premier bookstore.

However, having housed their collection in the same building since 1930, it was time for a change and with it, the mammoth task of moving over 500,000 books to new premises a mere 100 metres further down Tottenham Court Road in little over 3 days.

We were asked to document this process with a time-lapse film capturing the move between the two buildings.

The Journey

Moving days are stressful for everyone involved. We had to ensure each camera move would follow the shelves being unstacked or filled without being an obstruction, so detailed planning was crucial to the film’s success.

With every time-lapse taking between 45-90 minutes, we used 3 cameras with remote timed shutters to capture every second of the action. In addition to this, we used a motorised Digislider alongside the Syrp Genie to give the film its all important motion control.

The Outcome

Book lovers and time-lapse fans alike have taken to the film and shared it widely online through the Guardian website and Twitter. As things stand the film has racked up 1,000,000 views - or 2 views per book moved, if we’re really counting.
